Case Studies

1 – Measuring the impact of media content on social norms, knowledge and behaviours.

A leading non-profit organisation specialising in using media and mobile to change the lives of girls needed to establish the impact of their media brands and products.

TDC Research provided technical assistance to guide the design, implementation and analysis of national quantitative audience surveys in India, Rwanda, Malawi and Ethiopia. This included measuring multi-platform media content reach and engagement and designing quantitative data modelling techniques to establish the impacts of this content on girls’ lives.

2 – Strengthening audience research capabilities for digital news producers publishing in restricted environments.

Access to free and impartial information and news is continually challenged in many parts of the world, including through censorship and disinformation. Often, little is known by those working to overcome this challenge about the audiences their content is reaching.

TDC Research, with Cross-Pollinate Consulting, provided news publishers with training on low cost audience research techniques and produced a strategic framework for monitoring audience engagement across different digital platforms including Websites, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

3 - Evaluating the impact of scalable technology innovation for improving girls lives

Can animation and edutainment develop financial literacy and life skills amongst young people?

Can a mobile App develop girls confidence, teach essential life skills and even teach them self-defense techniques.

These are 2 questions that we have evaluated using quasi-experimental techniques to identify the impact of scalable technology designed to improve girls lives.

4 - Are we effectively developing the capacity of publics to think critically and develop their media literacy?

This was one of the questions that was the focus of a recent mid-term evaluation for a client working to support media literacy skills development and critical thinking amongst audiences.

Using a combination of evaluation questions informed by the OECD DAC evaluation criteria and an assessment of progress made to date the evaluation provided recommendations for activities to prioritise to maximise impact.
